Developing perspective is the theme this week as Mercury, the planet governing how we think and perceive, aligns with Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto to bring their mind-expanding archetypes into our awareness. In ruling the processes of the mind, Mercury represents how we assimilate the data we take in from our experiences and communicate what we’ve learned with others. Like synapses in the brain, Mercury makes connections between beings, and in Capricorn, does so in ways that are realistic, practical and purposeful. Mercury in Capricorn also represents a movement towards personal integrity in communications and working with information. On January 24, Mercury forms a conjunction to Pluto in Capricorn, tapping into the outer planet’s empowering nature. Pluto represents the depths of our existence and in Capricorn, its transformative intensity is focused on the structures of our lives. With Mercury in its orb, that translates into how we organize our thoughts and use words to convey our experiences. With a probing, investigative Mercury/Pluto alignment there is potential for astute perceptions that can reveal limiting belief systems, which if overcome can lead to a greater understanding of the fundamental source of our creative power. While it is still less than a degree from its conjunction to Pluto, Mercury next forms a sextile to Jupiter in Scorpio on January 25, creating a formidable three-planet configuration. As ruler of philosophy, faith and growth, Jupiter lends breadth to the Mercury/Pluto alignment. Jupiter’s principle of expansion in Scorpio, which is ruled by Pluto, can be forceful and can also bring about a strong sense of confidence. Mercury/Jupiter/Pluto in this stimulating aspect can correlate to a sense that we have the ability to do what ever we set out to do, and inspire us to be authentic and open to all possibilities.
On January 26, Mars enters Sagittarius, providing more energetic affinity during the week, as it is now in the sign ruled by Jupiter. The drive and initiative of Mars is most potent in Sagittarius when it is channeled into meaningful activities that support society. Sagittarius is about “the art of living together” and Mars here must answer to the Sagittarian need to make connections between the individual and society. While Mars in Sagittarius vigorously seeks adventure as a way of expanding awareness, the knowledge and wisdom it gleans from those experiences can be best expressed through the development of philosophies and ethics that become the basis for living together in harmony. Mars is challenged in this context, as its independent nature must find balance with answering to the needs of society.
On January 27, Mercury segues into a square to Uranus in Aries. This is a tense alignment that can generate friction but it can also provide momentum for change. Uranus is an awakening force that represents the process of recognizing our unique self, usually through some kind of disruption that brings to our awareness how much we have been conforming to stagnant habits. Mercury/Uranus represents the need for freedom of expression and can spark flashes of insight into just how shackled the mind is to mass consciousness. Uranus is still within a six-degree orb of a waning, long-term square to Pluto that has been correlating to massive changes in the structures of our society. Mercury “translating” this degree space gathers the forces of the slower moving planets and becomes a megaphone for their groundbreaking spirit. With Jupiter also infusing its wisdom into this planetary mix, this can correlate to a jump in awareness on a personal level in an area of focus. As Mercury travels from one outer planet to another, it can motivate deep, meaningful conversations that broaden our perspective with original ways of thinking. With these archetypes at forefront of our minds this week, we could begin to think about a bigger picture and channel that thinking into the depths, the breadths and the outer spaces of existence.
